Course Aim

The AB Initio ATC Course equips students with the essential knowledge and skills required to operate as Air Traffic Controllers in an Approach Control Surveillance environment. This course, designed for both Initial Training and further Rating Training for active Air Traffic Controllers, provides a comprehensive understanding of the complete Air Traffic Management system. Successful completion allows students to apply for an APS Student ATCO License. Additional rating endorsements like SRA, PAR, and TCL are available as supplementary courses.

Upon completion of this course, participants will:

  • Possess the necessary skills to perform Approach Control Radar Service safely, expeditiously, and in accordance with rules and regulations.
  • Have knowledge of the importance of teamwork and human factors affecting personal and team performance.

Course Structure

The standard course duration is approximately 5 days, with optional add-ons available for students seeking additional time to consolidate their skills.

Theoretical Training

Theoretical training is delivered through a mix of classroom sessions, group work, and discussions. Throughout the course, eLearning elements provide a flexible learning environment for online participation.

Practical Training

Practical simulator training takes place in a generic airspace. In the first phase, students focus on individual skill development, practicing techniques such as right and left turns, speed control during sequencing, and feeding aircraft in and out of holding patterns. The second phase introduces more traffic, new elements, and complex scenarios involving unusual and emergency events.

Content in Brief

The course covers a range of topics, including:

  • Radar vectoring, sequencing, separations, phraseology, and coordination in an approach service.
  • Handling VFR flights, change of runway procedures, and primary radar utilization.
  • Methods and handling of arriving, departing, and overflying traffic in a correct, safe, and orderly manner.
  • Management of transponder failure, communication failure, ACAS, special weather phenomena, and LVP.
  • Approach methods: ILS, NDB, SRE, VA.
  • Correct methods for traffic sequencing and response to unusual/emergency situations.

Prerequisites

Completion of our Basic ATC course or an equivalent program and English language skills at ICAO level 4 or higher.
