Course Aim

The Approach & Area RADAR Course is meticulously designed to provide participants with the essential knowledge and skills required to operate as both Approach and Area Controllers in a RADAR Surveillance environment. Tailored for both Initial Training and additional Rating Training for active Air Traffic Controllers, this comprehensive course encompasses RADAR control techniques for both terminal and en-route airspace. Successful completion enables participants to apply for an APS Student ATCO License, with options for pursuing additional rating endorsements such as SRA, PAR, and TCL through supplementary courses.

Upon completion of this course, participants will:

  • Acquire the necessary skills to conduct Approach and Area Control in a RADAR Surveillance environment safely, efficiently, and in adherence to established rules and regulations.
  • Develop a comprehensive understanding of RADAR control techniques for both terminal and en-route airspace, emphasizing vectoring, sequencing, separations, phraseology, and coordination.
  • Gain expertise in managing arriving, departing, and overflying traffic using RADAR surveillance.

Course Structure

The standard course duration is 3 weeks, incorporating both theoretical and practical components. The initial week focuses on theoretical foundations, covering topics such as the science of fatigue, regulatory requirements, and FRM methodologies. The subsequent two weeks involve practical applications, where participants engage in scenario-based exercises and real-world case studies to reinforce theoretical knowledge.

Theoretical Training

Theoretical training is delivered through a dynamic blend of classroom sessions, group work, and discussions. E-learning components are integrated to provide a flexible learning environment, allowing participants to engage in online lessons.

Practical Training

Practical training involves simulated exercises in both terminal and en-route RADAR Surveillance airspace. The course progresses through skill-building exercises, preparing participants for increasingly complex scenarios. This includes handling traffic with RADAR surveillance, managing vectoring and sequencing, and addressing RADAR-specific challenges in both Approach and Area Control.

Content in Brief

The course covers a range of topics, including:

  • RADAR control techniques for vectoring, sequencing, separations, phraseology, and coordination in both terminal and en-route airspace.
  • Managing VFR flights, change of route or runway procedures, and primary RADAR control methods.
  • Handling transponder failure, communication failure, ACAS, special weather phenomena, and LVP with RADAR support.
  • Methods for handling arriving, departing, and overflying traffic using RADAR control in both Approach and Area Control.

Prerequisites

Completion of our Basic ATC course or equivalent and English language skills at ICAO level 4 or higher.

Compliance with Regulations

The Approach & Area RADAR Course complies with Commission Regulation (EU) 2015/340 and is approved by the Swedish National Supervisory Authority. ICS Aviation Training and Solutions is certified as a training organization by the Swedish National Supervisory Authority.
